The chairs of the counter-terrorism committees submit their annual reports to the Security Council

The Security Council will hold its annual open briefing on the work of its counter-terrorism committees, today, Wednesday, “New York time”, where the heads of the three committees will submit separate reports on their activities during the year.
Participating in the session – according to a Security Council statement – are the Chair of the ISIS and Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee, Ambassador of Denmark Sandra Jensen Lande, and the Chairman of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, Ambassador Algeria Ammar Benjameh, and the Chairman of the Resolution Committee on the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Panamanian Ambassador Eloy Alvaro de Alba.
Landy reviews developments related to the work of the Sanctions Committee, including recent decisions taken by the Council, such as removing prominent Syrian figures from the sanctions list and extending humanitarian exceptions within the sanctions regime related to ISIS and Al-Qaeda. She also addresses the results of the latest report of the Monitoring Team, which indicates the weakness of Al-Qaeda’s central leadership. In exchange for its increased interest in foreign operations, and the continued external threat posed by ISIS emanating from Syria despite the decline in its activity in Iraq and other Syrian regions.
The report also presents a worrying picture of the escalation of extremist groups’ activity in Africa, especially in the Sahel region, where the Group to Support Islam and Muslims is carrying out more complex and widespread attacks, in addition to the deteriorating conditions in Mali and the attacks approaching the capital, Bamako. He also reviews the meetings that the committee recently held, including an event on the occasion of the twenty-year anniversary of the establishment of the Executive Directorate.
Alvaro presents a presentation of the efforts of the Resolution Committee on the field of non-proliferation, stressing the importance of the national plans presented by 39 countries so far, and their role in strengthening the capabilities of countries to implement the resolution. He also addresses the field activities of the Committee, including the training program scheduled to be held in mid-December in Panama to support the capabilities of contact points in Latin American and Caribbean countries to implement commitments related to preventing weapons of mass destruction from reaching unauthorized parties.
