Abu Dhabi, December 6, 2017 – The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority stressed the importance of the step taken by the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council to adopt the decision to establish the “Gulf Civil Aviation Authority” and choose the UAE as its headquarters, noting that the step reflects a strategic direction to enhance Gulf integration in the air transport system, and push it towards more coordinated and harmonious horizons, which creates unprecedented growth opportunities for this vital sector, not only at the Gulf level, but also at the regional and international levels.
His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, said that the approval of the establishment of the Gulf Civil Aviation Authority represents a pivotal step in the process of joint Gulf action, and reflects the unified vision of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries towards building an integrated aviation system that supports trade, tourism and economic development.
He added that the UAE’s hosting of the Authority’s headquarters represents a qualitative addition that gives the country more weight and influence, enhances its leadership position in the international aviation sector, and confirms its pivotal role in developing this sector at the regional level. This decision also reflects the keenness of the GCC countries to enhance integration in strategic sectors, most notably the civil aviation sector, which contributes to consolidating the region’s position as a global center for air transport and logistics services and enhances its competitiveness at the regional and international levels.
For his part, His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, said that this decision establishes a new phase of Gulf coordination based on unifying visions and enhancing institutional cooperation between the authorities concerned with civil aviation in the GCC countries, in a way that supports the sector’s readiness to keep pace with the rapid transformations witnessed by the air transport industry globally.
He stressed that choosing the UAE as the headquarters of the Authority embodies confidence in organizational competence and national expertise in developing the civil aviation system, and reflects the country’s commitment to supporting joint Gulf initiatives in a way that serves the collective interests of the GCC countries.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation also affirmed its commitment to providing various forms of support necessary for the success of the Gulf Authority’s work, and to actively contribute to achieving the goals for which it was established, in a way that enhances the status of Gulf aviation and establishes its influential presence on the international arena.
The Gulf Civil Aviation Authority aims to raise the level of joint action between the GCC countries in the field of civil aviation by enhancing legislative and operational harmony and integration among member states, in a way that supports achieving the highest levels of safety, security and efficiency in air transport operations, and enhances the ability to keep pace with rapid technical developments in the global aviation industry.
