Confrontations in the Caribbean Sea
The Venezuelan armed forces include about two hundred thousand soldiers in addition to two hundred thousand policemen, according to official figures.
Since August, the administration of US President Donald Trump has strengthened the US military presence in the Caribbean Sea and off the coast of Latin America, in order to combat drugs, while accusing the Venezuelan president of leading a smuggling cartel.
It denies Caracas accuses Washington of seeking to change the regime in Venezuela and control its oil reserves.
Since September, US forces have destroyed more than 20 boats suspected of being used in drug smuggling in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific Ocean, with strikes that left 87 dead.
