Registration is open for the sailboat races at Al Yasat Festival

ABU DHABI, 7 December, 2017 (WAM) – The Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club announced the opening of registration to participate in the Al Yasat Race for 60-foot sailboats, and Al-Qafai, for 22-foot sailboats, which are held within the activities of the Al Yasat Marine Festival, organized by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club.

The club confirmed in a statement issued today that the date for holding the races will be determined during one of the days of the festival, which begins in two stages, the first from December 12 to 14, and the second from December 19 to 21.

This year, the race witnesses a new track that starts for the first time from Dalma Island, passing through Al Yasat Island, and reaching Al Sila Point, with a total distance of 37 nautical miles (70 kilometers), to be among the long races in the category of 60-foot sailboats.

The organizing committee explained that adopting this route comes within the framework of developing maritime heritage races and enhancing their presence in historical marine environments, in addition to raising the level of competitiveness by running a longer distance that requires high skills in traditional navigation.

She pointed out that the high demand for registration reflects the race’s status among pilots and sailors.

The committee said: The Al Yasat Race for 60-foot sailboats reflects the efforts made to support and sustain heritage races, by adopting longer sea routes that are compatible with the nature of traditional navigation known by the people of the sea in the UAE, and that the new track from Dalma to Al Sila gives participants a strong competitive experience, and enhances the presence of maritime heritage within national events.

The organizing committee will announce the final date for the race this week after completing the technical and logistical arrangements.
