Mohammed Al Hammadi is the first Arab to head the Atlanta Center of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators

Abu Dhabi, December 9, 2017 – The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company announced today the selection of His Excellency Mohammed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company and its group of companies, as President of the Atlanta Center of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators in the United States of America, making him the first Arab and the first Asian to hold this position.

The mission of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators is to enhance the safety standards and operational efficiency of nuclear energy through its global network that links nuclear operators and contributes to the exchange of best practices at the sector level, as the Atlanta Center includes members from operating companies that manage more than 100 commercial nuclear plants in North America, in addition to a number of selected international operators, which represents a strong platform to enhance coordination in the areas of performance, mutual review and exchange of operational experiences.

The selection of Al Hammadi for the position of President by the Atlanta Center highlights the international recognition of the contributions of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company in promoting operational excellence at the global level, and its commitment to the highest international standards of quality and safety in the peaceful nuclear energy sector, as Al Hammadi played an active leadership role in the International Organization of Nuclear Operators for more than a decade, when he joined the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Center in August 2015, and assumed the presidency of the international organization itself during the period from 2022 to 2024.

This announcement comes at a time when the peaceful nuclear energy sector is growing in the United States, in light of recent federal measures and partnerships aimed at accelerating the development of new peaceful nuclear energy plants.

This development also comes after the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company signed a number of partnership agreements with leading companies in the American nuclear energy sector, with the aim of promoting the dissemination of peaceful nuclear energy technologies at the global level.

Through memorandums of understanding signed with Westinghouse, GE Vernova and others, the company is also exploring more cooperation opportunities to develop joint projects, including expanding the nuclear fuel supply chain, and potential investment in new nuclear energy projects.

As a member of the Atlanta Center of the International Organization of Nuclear Operators, Emirates Nuclear Energy Company is keen to ensure that its operations are in line with best American operational practices in the peaceful nuclear energy sector.

Based on the precise regulatory environment in the UAE and the requirements derived from the regulations of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the company is now in a position that qualifies it to move quickly towards implementing joint projects in cooperation with partners from the United States.

His Excellency Mohammed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company and its group of companies, said: “This assignment reflects the level of progress that the UAE’s expertise has reached in the peaceful nuclear energy sector, which comes thanks to the directives of the wise leadership and its continuous support. In this context, we confirm the continued support of all members as part of our ongoing endeavors towards achieving operational excellence in the nuclear energy sector. The International Organization of Nuclear Operators’ mission of enhancing safety and reliability has been the main focus of our operational strategy at the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company.” We remain committed to contributing to strengthening the expertise of the Atlanta Center and the International Organization of Nuclear Operators, to advance the operational excellence of peaceful nuclear power plants worldwide.

Al Hammadi added: Based on the distinguished experiences we have at the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company with regard to development and operation, we look forward to continuing to work with our partners in the United States to accelerate the process of developing and deploying peaceful nuclear energy, in accordance with the highest standards of quality, safety and reliability, and in a way that contributes to enhancing energy security, especially with the unprecedented rise in demand for energy in the United States.
