Trump revokes temporary protected status for Ethiopians

A government notice issued on Friday showed that the administration of US President Donald Trump has ended the temporary protected status granted to Ethiopian citizens residing in the United States.
“After reviewing the country’s conditions and consulting with the appropriate government agencies, it has been determined that Ethiopia no longer meets the requirements for temporary protected status,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in the notice published in the Official Gazette.
The US President has previously granted temporary protected status to citizens of a number of countries, since taking office last January, as part of his campaign against immigrants.
Under American law, “temporary protection” is a humanitarian classification for countries affected by wars, natural disasters, or other disasters, which protects beneficiaries residing in America from deportation, and gives them the right to obtain work permits.
