On its second day…the Riyadh Theater Festival continues its creative presence

Continue Riyadh Theater Festival in its third session, organized by The Theater and Performing Arts Authority, its cultural and artistic presence on its second day, through a diverse program of Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University, where the festival activities continue until December 22nd.

The second day witnessed the completion of the training programs through a specialized workshop on theatrical space and scenography, presented by Professor Muhammad Jameel, during which he reviewed applied models and visual examples that dealt with the relationship between scenographic composition and dramatic structure, and the role of visual elements in building meaning and enhancing the artistic impact of the recipient.

Element Active

The workshop focused on employing theatrical space as an active element in the dramatic narrative, going beyond being a visual frame, while providing practical readings of different theatrical experiences, which contributed to enriching the discussion about scenography as an expressive tool that contributes to intensifying connotations and building the theatrical scene, in a way that supports the development of tools for practitioners and those interested in theatrical art.

Within the theatrical performances, the play “Utopia” was presented. By the Note Band, written and directed by Professor and Dr. Noman Kadoh, whose events take place inside a psychiatric hospital that includes a group of inmates, in a dramatic presentation that reveals the contradictions of the human soul, and presents psychological disorders as a comprehensive condition that affects all characters, including the doctor and the nurse, in a dramatic paradox that intersects with the world’s readiness to celebrate “Earth Day” as a symbol of the quality of psychological and material life.

Deep Intellectual

The presentation was followed by a critical reading. The play was presented by critic Ayed Al-Baqmi, in which he discussed the dramatic structure, methods of artistic and symbolic treatment, and the deep intellectual questions the work raises about man and his psychology, pointing to the success of the show in employing theatrical elements to serve its humanitarian and intellectual message.

In the context of the same performances, the play “Disruption” was presented, which tells the story of Khaled, a man in his early forties whose health condition deteriorates after suffering from cancer, in a humanitarian work that discusses the concepts of fate and death. And freedom, and raises existential questions about the meaning of life when it turns into a harsh wait and a suspended fate.

Critical Reading

Critic Nasser Al-Omari presented a critical reading of the work, during which he stopped at the dramatic treatment of the text, its human dimensions, and its narrative construction, highlighting how the event and character are used to raise existential questions that form the core of the work.

The day’s activities also included short performances. It was presented on the festival site, contributed to creating an interactive and lively atmosphere, and enhanced the audience’s presence and participation in the theatrical experience.

The Riyadh Theater Festival comes within the efforts aimed at revitalizing the local theatrical movement, enhancing the presence of theater in the cultural scene, discovering talents and supporting theater groups, in a way that contributes to developing the cultural scene in the Kingdom, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
