المملكة: Manufacturing a nanomaterial for cartilage repair in space for the first time


Declared Saudi astronauts carried out 19 scientific experiments on board the International Space Station, the results of which turned into research and scientific achievements that contribute to enhancing the quality of human life.

She explained that the scientific research led by scientists Yuping Chen and Mary Ann Snow was part of international scientific cooperation that focused on developing advanced biomaterials for tissue engineering, while Saudi astronaut Rayana Barnawi carried out the experiment in space and collected data in a microgravity environment, which contributed to achieving a scientific achievement represented in the manufacture of a material Nano nanoparticles dedicated to repairing cartilage in space for the first time, in a step that supports the trend towards manufacturing advanced tissues and treatments that contribute to organ transplantation initiatives.

Accuracy and quality

The results of the research were published in the journal Nature – one of the most prominent international scientific journals – and the results showed the accuracy and quality of nanomaterial manufacturing compared to manufacturing in the Earth’s environment, which enhances the use of space as a research platform for developing innovative medical solutions that serve human health.

In this context, Rayana Barnawi said: "Carrying out the experiment in space made it possible to manufacture an advanced nanomaterial and produce reliable data that supports the development of scientific research that contributes to improving human life and serving humanity"

While the agency confirmed that these scientific outputs reflect the complementary role between scientists and astronauts during the mission, and that these results represent an extension of the Kingdom’s efforts to maximize the scientific return of manned exploration missions, and transform space missions into scientific achievements with a sustainable impact, in line with the objectives of Vision 2030.
