Russia achieves complete self-sufficiency in basic food products

Moscow, January 4, 2017 – Vice-Chairman of the Agricultural Affairs Committee in the Russian State Duma, Yulia Ogloblina, announced that Russia has achieved complete self-sufficiency in basic food products, and there is a surplus in milk reserves.
Ogloblina said, in an interview with the Russian “TASS” agency: “In general, our needs are met in the main areas of food security, which include grains, sunflower oil, sugar, and meat.”
She added that the country is “slightly lacking” in achieving the target levels in the Food Security Doctrine for vegetables, fruits and berries, as well as milk and dairy products, adding: “But thanks to our Belarusian brothers, we are certainly completely self-sufficient here as well. Currently, we even have a surplus.”
She explained that this indicates that everything is available in her country in principle, calling on its citizens not to feel anxious.
She pointed out that the Russian Ministry of Agriculture is working to increase local production of milk, explaining: “We now have a mission to increase the productivity of cows, and the focus is on industrial dairy complexes.”
She concluded by saying: “I visit such modern and large complexes – there are thousands of heads of livestock, there are milking robots, and the Ministry of Agriculture sees the market being saturated first through such large complexes,” stressing that raising dairy-producing animals receives priority in all support measures and preferential financing.
