Urgent: Greenland in response to Trump: We do not want to be Americans or Danes
Political parties announced in Greenlanddoes not want to be under Washington’s control, at a time when the US President waved Donald Trump again used force to control the mineral-rich Danish region, which sparked concern around the world.
The statement of the five parties represented in the local parliament was issued late on Friday after Trump repeated that Washington "You’re going to do something about Greenland, whether they like it or not"
European capitals are intensifying their efforts to reach a coordinated response after The White House said this week that Trump wants to buy Greenland and does not rule out military action.
Determining Greenland’s future
The party leaders said in a joint announcement "We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders"they added "Greenlandians must decide Greenland’s future".
They stressed that "No other country can interfere in this matter. We must decide the future of our country ourselves, without pressure to make a hasty decision, without procrastination and without interference from other countries."
Denmark and its European allies expressed their shock at Trump’s threats to control Greenland, the strategic island located between North America and the Arctic and where the United States has had a military base since World War II.
Trump says that controlling this strategic island is crucial to American national security given the increasing military activity of Russia and China in the Arctic Circle.
Enormous natural resources
The US President said on Friday. "We cannot allow Russia or China to occupy Greenland. This is what they will do if we don’t do it. So we’re going to take action on Greenland, whether it’s the easy way or the harder way"
Russia and China have intensified their military activity in the region in recent years, but neither of them has claimed sovereignty over this vast icy island.
Greenland has aroused international attention in recent years due to its enormous natural resources, including rare minerals, and estimates indicate that it may possess huge reserves of oil and gas.
