"Burjeel Abu Dhabi" She succeeds in replanting a completely amputated hand

ABU DHABI, 15 JANUARY / WAM / A specialized medical team at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi succeeded in performing a precise and complex surgery that lasted 10 continuous hours, to replant the hand and part of the forearm of a 50-year-old resident, who suffered a complete amputation of the upper limb as a result of a serious work accident.

Dr. Praveen Kumar Arumagam, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Burjeel Medical City, said that the medical team performed a careful dissection of the amputated limb and the affected limb to determine the condition of the muscles, tendons, nerves, arteries, veins and bones. This was followed by cleaning the damaged tissue, then stabilizing the forearm bones using plates and screws, and repairing two arteries and four veins to restore blood flow, before restoring the muscles, tendons and nerves and closing the skin surgically, while giving the patient blood thinners to prevent clotting.

He pointed out that the patient underwent the second stage of treatment, which included placing a skin patch in the areas where the skin was lost, while immobilizing the limb with a medical splint. During the treatment period, six units of blood were transfused, while careful measures were taken to prevent the occurrence of reperfusion injury, which could lead to serious complications such as kidney or heart failure.

For his part, Dr. Arivind Bhamidi, a plastic surgery specialist, explained that the biggest challenge was the nature of the injury, which was not a clean cut, but rather a crushing and dislocated injury to the bones, which increased the complexity of the surgery. He pointed out that the medical teams were prepared for microsurgery while transporting the patient, and worked in parallel to ensure that blood flow was restored to the hand as quickly as possible.

The patient is currently undergoing a recovery program that includes physical therapy to improve finger movement, with continuous medical follow-up, as he showed noticeable improvement and partial ability to move his hand.
