The Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi launches a policy for purchasing high-efficiency devices for government agencies

ABU DHABI, 15 JANUARY / WAM / The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy announced the launch of the “Policy for Purchasing New High-Efficiency Appliances for Government Entities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” as one of the main enablers within the updated Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030, which aims to reduce electricity consumption by 22% (equivalent to 19 terawatt-hours), and reduce water consumption by 32% (equivalent to 465 million cubic metres) by 2030, compared to a baseline. The policy aims to accelerate energy and water efficiency by ensuring that government agencies purchase included devices designed to reduce energy and water consumption.

This policy also reinforces the leadership of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in sustainable government procurement, and represents a clear signal of a broader shift in the markets towards adopting highly efficient products.

By establishing energy and water efficiency as a core criterion in procurement processes, the policy contributes to enhancing cost savings throughout the asset life cycle and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The policy is expected to enable annual savings of 8.2 GWh of electricity and 120,000 cubic meters of water by 2030, depending on appliance replacement rates and adoption levels.

His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, said that the policy of purchasing high-efficiency devices for government agencies reflects the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s firm commitment to achieving energy and water efficiency. By ensuring that the devices purchased by government agencies adhere to high efficiency standards, we establish the concepts of sustainability at the core of government operations, and enhance the long-term environmental and economic value of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

For his part, His Excellency Eng. Ahmed Al Falasi, Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector at the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, said that this enabler embodies how policies and procurement can work side by side to achieve a tangible environmental impact. The policy also enables suppliers and manufacturers to innovate and provide the most efficient technologies, which enhances Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading regional destination in the field of sustainable procurement.

Implementing the policy would achieve a significant reduction in the operational costs of government agencies, in addition to improving the efficiency of government buildings in general. The policy also aims to send clear signals to the markets that encourage investment in advanced, highly efficient technologies, and offer more innovative and efficient solutions.

It is noteworthy that this policy supports the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and is consistent with the climate change strategy of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which enhances the emirate’s role as a global leader in sustainable energy policies and efficient use of resources.
