With the support of more than 20 countries…an emergency council meeting on Iran "human rights"


The United Nations declared that Iranfollowing the crackdown on anti-government protests.

The countries supporting the request include Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Switzerland. The request is also supported by 30 observer countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Ukraine.

In a letter addressed to the President of the Council, the five countries submitting the request stressed the necessity of holding an extraordinary session in view of Due to the importance and urgency of the situation.

Deteriorating living conditions

The protests began on December 28 against the backdrop of deteriorating living conditions, and turned into a movement raising political slogans against the Iranian authorities that have been in place since 1979.

These protests constituted the biggest challenge facing the Iranian leadership since the demonstrations that lasted for months in late 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini while she was arrested by the morality police on charges of violating the strict dress code in The country.

The momentum of the protests declined in recent days, while government officials confirmed that calm had returned to the country, following a campaign of severe repression that human rights organizations say resulted in the deaths of thousands, and was accompanied by the blocking of the Internet as of January 8.

Human Rights in Iran

The organization’s latest statistics reported "Human rights in Iran" (IHR) cited by the United Nations as killing at least 3,428 protesters. However, other estimates mentioned by the same human rights organization indicate that the actual death toll may reach 20,000.

In November 2022, the United Nations Human Rights Council decided to establish an independent international fact-finding mission regarding Iran, to investigate allegations of human rights violations related to the protests that the Islamic Republic witnessed starting in September of that year.

The mission’s mandate was renewed in April of last year to enable it to investigate allegations of "Recent and ongoing gross human rights violations in Iran"

The investigation committee said earlier this month that it was reviewing materials, including video footage and photos, of recent protests and the crackdown.
