UNICEF: A massive return-to-learning campaign in Gaza includes 336,000 children, to restore hope and build the future

Elder alerted that “60% of school-age children in Gaza do not currently receive in-person education.”Noting that 90% of schools were damaged or destroyed.

He pointed out that “Before this war on children”Palestinians in Gaza have had some of the highest literacy rates in the world, and education has been a source of pride, resilience, and progress for generations.

He went on to say at the bi-weekly press conference of United Nations agencies in Geneva: “Today, this legacy is under severe attack. Schools, universities and libraries have been destroyed, and years of progress erased. This is not just physical destruction. It is an assault on the future itself.”.

“Learning saves lives”

A UNICEF spokesman announced that “The Back to Learning program will be expanded to include 336,000 children.”.

He stressed that the top priority is to return children to education immediately, noting that this is often done in tents within local communities and community centres, adding that they cannot wait until stable buildings are built.

Elder stressed that “Learning saves lives”adding that the educational centers and spaces affiliated with UNICEF “Provides safe spaces in an area that is often unsafe and dangerous.”.

He stressed that these educational centers “It re-provides vital information and provides routine to children. It connects girls and boys to health, nutrition and protection services. UNICEF learning spaces have adequate toilets and hand-washing areas.”.

Turning hope into reality

The UN official confirmed that the demand for educational centers is huge, saying: “When I was in Gaza two weeks ago, I saw dozens of parents outside learning centers begging for places for their children.”.

He pointed out that the cost of enrolling one child in a UNICEF educational center is about 280 US dollars annually, including psychological support, explaining that in order to provide education to 336,000 children during the remainder of this year, UNICEF urgently needs 86 million US dollars. He added: “Let us put this amount in a global context. It is approximately what the world spends on coffee in an hour or two.”.

Elder emphasized that the Return to Learning program is not limited to mere survival, but rather is about protecting the engine of Gaza’s future.

He added that the program aims to: “Keeping the flame (of hope) burning, giving children a daily routine, restoring dignity and direction to them.”adding that “It’s about how to turn hope into reality, and how to rebuild the future.”.
