المملكة: Saudi Arabia provides $10 million to provide safe and sustainable water in Sudan
Signed by the CEO of For the Saudi Fund for DevelopmentSultan bin Abdul Rahman Al-Murshid, with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Dr. Barham Salih, and the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Sudan to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Hassan Hamid Hassan; A memorandum of understanding for a grant provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the Fund in the amount of $10 million, to provide safe and sustainable water to communities affected by conflicts in the Republic of Sister Sudan, in the presence of the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdel Mohsen Bin Khathila.
The memorandum aims to rehabilitate and expand the main water networks in Sudan, including improving the supply system of Nile water in the city of Khartoum, rehabilitating its operation with solar energy, enhancing technical capabilities, and the participation of the local community to ensure the sustainability of the project, facilitate access to water, reduce the risks of diseases and epidemics, and enhance public health, in addition to raising the level of Its steadfastness in the face of environmental challenges.
Drinkable water
During the signing of the memorandum, the guide stressed the Kingdom’s efforts, through the Saudi Fund for Development, to support the sisterly Republic of Sudan to access safe drinking water, as it is considered a pillar of health and quality of life, noting that this grant, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, contributes to strengthening the infrastructure of the water sector and providing sustainable solutions that meet urgent needs and support long-term development in Sudan.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said: "When people have access to basic services, they can stabilize and move forward. This generous financial support not only meets urgent water needs, but also strengthens the resilience and self-reliance of people in conflict areas, and develops the vital systems that communities depend on. Sustainable solutions require strong and ongoing partnerships."
Saudi support
This memorandum comes within the Kingdom’s development efforts, which would contribute to alleviating suffering and reducing the risks of diseases associated with polluted water, and supporting community health, to support the most needy communities and enable them to access basic services that restore dignity and improve the quality of life in Sudan.
It is noteworthy that the development relationship between the Saudi Fund for Development and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees extends more than (10) years, during which the Fund contributed to financing (18) development projects in 8 developing countries, with a value of more than (85) million dollars, from which more than 5 million beneficiaries benefited. This long-term cooperation embodies the common development goals in the areas of sustainable development.
