The National Archives and Library organizes a symposium on the historical research movement in the UAE

Cairo, 1st February / WAM / The Archives and the National Library organized a cultural symposium entitled “The Center for Historical Research Movement in the Emirates”, as part of its participation in the activities of the fifty-seventh session of the Cairo International Book Fair, which discussed its role in supporting scientific research, preserving memory, and preserving history, in a way that enhances the documentation of rights and the consolidation of national identity.

The symposium, in which the expert Dr. Abdul Latif Al Sayadi lectured, confirmed that the National Archives and Library contain a unique wealth of knowledge and history, including millions of rare documents and materials that document various aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life in the UAE and the Arabian Gulf region, from the sixteenth century until the modern era. They are preserved in accordance with the latest scientific and technical standards, in addition to being digitized and made available electronically to ensure their sustainability and ease of access.

Al-Sayadi explained that the National Archives and Library provide researchers with various historical sources in various languages, including English, French, Portuguese and Dutch, stressing that historical documents represent an authentic and reliable source of information, and have a high scientific and evidentiary value.

He pointed out that these documents contributed to supporting a number of cases considered before international arbitration and judicial bodies and constituted decisive evidence in tipping the balance in favor of one of the parties to the conflict, and establishing national rights and sovereignty over the disputed territories.

The symposium reviewed the ongoing efforts made by the Archives and the National Library to preserve the nation’s memory, through implementing specialized projects to acquire, restore and digitize government and personal documents, in addition to preserving the national cultural heritage and active participation in international institutions and organizations.

Al-Sayadi stated that, pursuant to Federal Law No. 13 of 2021, the National Library joined the umbrella of the archive, to become a comprehensive national reference and a leading cultural and information center, concerned with preserving the intellectual and cultural heritage of the UAE, and supporting research and knowledge, in a way that reflects the status of the UAE and its leadership in preserving memory and building the future.
