A US Senate delegation is in Greenland to rebuild confidence

A delegation from US Senate Greenland on Monday with the aim of rebuilding the trust undermined by the intention of President Donald Trump took over the island.
Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said in a press conference: "In a few sentences and a few words, the trust that has been established since World War II has eroded and collapsed, and we must work to rebuild it."
She added: "We’re here to remind you that our president can make some statements, but we have a role to play, too, as members of Congress."
In addition to Murkowski, the delegation includes independent Senator Angus King and Democrats Gary Peters and Maggie Hassan.
The delegation specifically visited the US military base in Petovik, and met with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, and will also meet with Foreign Minister Vivan Motzfeld.
Trump retracted his threat
In January, Trump angered Greenland by declaring his intention to take control of this autonomous island. And subject to the sovereignty of Denmark, even if that required the use of force.
But he later returned from his threat, announcing that a framework for negotiations had been reached with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, with the aim of giving Washington broader influence on the island.
As a result, a working group was formed that included representatives of Greenland, Denmark and the United States to discuss the issue.
We must restore confidence
Senator Gary Peters said on Monday: We must now regain confidence".
He added "We consider you friends, we want you to consider us your friends as well"
Denmark and Greenland confirm that they share the concerns expressed by Donald Trump regarding security issues, but they stress that sovereignty and territorial integrity constitute a red line in the tripartite talks.
