المملكة: president "Meteorology" For “Al-Youm”: 30 scientific studies were completed, including climate modeling with a resolution of 4 kilometers

CEO confirmed For the National Center of Meteorology Dr. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam told Al-Youm that during its first phase, the Regional Center for Climate Change completed 30 qualitative scientific studies, which included numerical climate modeling with an accuracy of up to 4 kilometers, in a step he described as representing an advanced scientific shift in reading the details of the climate in the Kingdom, and with a level of accuracy that is not available in a number of global centers.

He explained "Boy"After the closing meeting of the first phase of the initiative, he said that his memory returned to the first beginnings of launching the idea within the National Transformation Program, and the great challenges that accompanied it to obtain the necessary approvals, indicating that passing that stage would not have been achieved without the efforts of the work team and the support that the initiative received until reaching Officially establishing the center.

He explained that choosing the center’s headquarters at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology came out of concern for a distinguished research environment that supports specialized scientific work, pointing out that what was achieved within a short period reflects the amount of support that the meteorological sector enjoys from the wise leadership, whether in terms of financial capabilities, human resources, or technical infrastructure, most importantly the provision of a high-performance computer that enabled researchers to implement advanced numerical models.

Weather studies and heavy rain

He pointed out that one of the most prominent studies completed by the center is the study of heavy rain and ways to protect against it, as attention was paid to Decision makers pointed out the possibility of the Kingdom being exposed to climate changes that may witness rainfall amounts exceeding normal rates, within the framework of a proactive approach that enhances preparedness.

He added that the center also prepared an integrated study of drought scenarios, which included a detailed analysis of drought hotspots in the Kingdom, and monitoring the transformation of some areas from wet to dry, allowing an accurate scientific vision that supports adaptation plans and resource management.

The most prominent afforestation efforts

With regard to initiatives Afforestation, Ghulam explained that the Center carried out a specialized study on the impact of afforestation on the Kingdom’s climate in the context of the Green Saudi Arabia and Green Middle East initiatives, confirming the completion of the study and the readiness of its results to be shared with the relevant authorities and decision makers.

The Center’s work also dealt with the study of sea level rise and its potential effects on the Kingdom’s coasts, in addition to studying the “El Nino” and “La Nina” phenomena, where an integrated and thoughtful scientific vision was prepared about their repercussions on the climate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Ghulam stressed that what was achieved in the first phase represents a solid scientific basis for the next phase, and strengthens the center’s position as a national knowledge umbrella specialized in supporting climate decision-making, and raising the Kingdom’s readiness to deal with current and future climate challenges.
