Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi chairs the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah

Sharjah, June 3, 2017 – His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, chaired, this Wednesday morning, the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah, in His Highness’s office at the university’s headquarters.

At the beginning of the meeting, His Highness welcomed the new members of the Council, extending his thanks and appreciation to all members of the previous Council for their tireless efforts that contributed to the development of the university and the advancement of its level at various levels. His Highness praised their pivotal role in the process of its progress and development, and His Highness affirmed his support for the members of the current Council and the constructive opinions and proposals they will provide, expressing his wishes for them to succeed in their tasks, and for their visions to contribute to Promoting the development of the university and sustaining its excellence at all academic, research and institutional levels.

His Highness, the President of the University of Sharjah, praised the university’s achievements that strengthened its institutional reputation and contributed to its progress in international rankings, in addition to launching strategic initiatives in artificial intelligence, robotics, health care simulation and innovation. His Highness praised the continuation of academic and research operations and the achievement of graduating students on the scheduled dates despite the challenges facing the region.

His Highness stressed that the next stage requires intensifying efforts and continuing to develop the scientific research system and modernizing academic programs to keep pace with technological transformations, and accelerating the absorption of emerging technologies in education, research and institutional operations, in addition to ensuring that education outcomes are aligned with the needs of the local and international labor market, attracting distinguished academic competencies, and expanding strategic partnerships with the government and private sectors locally and internationally. His Highness stressed the importance of investing in developing Emirati talent and developing future leaders, expressing his confidence in the university’s ability. To consolidate its position as a leading research university serving the UAE and the region.

The Council approved the university’s operating budget for the academic year 2026-2027, which amounted to 1.36 billion dirhams. The Council also approved the graduation of a new batch of students who have completed graduation requirements by the end of the spring semester 2025-2026. Their total number is 1,927 male and female graduates, including 1,500 with bachelor’s degrees, 66 with doctoral degrees, 355 with master’s degrees, and 6 with postgraduate diploma degrees.

The Council approved a number of new academic programs that keep pace with the changing labor market requirements and enhance the university’s ability to provide the necessary competencies to contribute to enhancing the national development process. These are the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, the Doctor of Philosophy in Advanced Diagnostic Sciences and Medical Laboratory Sciences, the Master of Science in Nuclear Technology and Radiation Management, the Master of Arts in Digital Institutional Communication, the Master of Arts in Digital Media, and the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

The Council approved the establishment of the University of Sharjah Robotics Center, and the start of establishing the University of Sharjah Innovation Center in partnership with LG. The Council also reviewed the activities of the Jawaher Al Qasimi Center for Palestinian Studies.

The Council reviewed the readiness to launch the University of Sharjah and E&Emirates Innovation Center, in addition to the adoption of the updated version of the university’s “EDGE” strategy for the period 2024-2030, the plan to strengthen the university’s scientific research system, the university’s governance framework, and the updated organizational structure.

The Council approved the promotion of 23 faculty members, including 13 to the rank of professor, and 10 to the rank of associate professor, in recognition of their distinguished research and academic efforts and service to society, and as an incentive to provide more, in addition to their distinguished role in using modern teaching and learning methods.

The Council reviewed the report of Dr. Essam El-Din Ajami, Director of the University of Sharjah, in which he reviewed the university’s performance and achievements during the academic year 2025-2026 AD in the scientific research sector, developing the infrastructure for this vital sector, developing and modernizing the sources of scientific research and community service, and linking its outputs with the national agenda for development plans and strategic priorities of the state in general and the Emirate of Sharjah in particular, which strengthens the university’s pioneering position in the country and the region.

Ajami discussed the university’s performance according to international classifications, reviewing the development and sustainability of the university’s progress in various classifications, and the national and international academic accreditations for the new programs for the year 2025-2026 AD, which amounted to 49 programs as follows: 9 doctoral programs, 24 master’s programs, 15 bachelor’s programs, and a postgraduate diploma program, bringing the total number of accredited academic programs offered by the university to 158 programs.

The report of the Director of the University of Sharjah addressed the feasibility of the academic programs offered and the extent of their compatibility with the requirements of the local and international labor market during the current and future period, and attracting qualified academic competencies, in addition to reviewing the university’s plan to strengthen the health care system and the necessary infrastructure for clinical training for students in the faculties of medicine, health sciences and pharmacy, in addition to a presentation of the students’ achievements in academic, sports, cultural and artistic activities, and the developments of the project to establish a branch of the University of Sharjah in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The Council also reviewed the reports of the specialized committees, including the report of the Finance Committee, the report of the Internal Audit and Risk Management Committee, the report of the Emiratisation Committee, and the report of the Academic Committee.

The meeting was attended, alongside His Highness, by Dr. Mansour Mohammed bin Nassar, Head of the Legal Department of the Government of Sharjah, Dr. Muhaddith Yahya Al Hashemi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Mohammed Abdullah, CEO of Sharjah Islamic Bank, Dr. Essam Al-Din Ajami, Director of the University of Sharjah, Dr. Hamid Majoul Al-Nuaimi, Advisor to the President of the University of Sharjah and Director of the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Complex, Dr. Khawla Abdul Rahman Al-Mulla, former Head of the Family Affairs Authority, and Dr. Mohammed Youssef Bani. Dr. Yas, advisor for higher education affairs at the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Dr. Younis Hassan Al-Mulla, an expert in strategies and institutional development, Dr. Jack Vermont, former president of the University of Ottawa in Canada, Dr. Muhammad Hamdi bin Abdul Shakur, former vice president of the University of Malaya in Malaysia, Dr. Paul O’Byrne, dean of the College of Health Sciences and vice president of McMaster University in Canada, Dr. Kamal Yousef Al-Toumi, professor of mechanical engineering and co-director of the Center for Pure Water and Clean Energy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States of America, and Dr. Osama Al-Khatib. Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and Director of the Stanford Robotics Center at Stanford University in the United States of America.
