The Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa organizes "The second Shawwaf Forum"

Abu Dhabi, February 16 / WAM / The activities of the “Second Al Shawwaf Forum: Crescent Investigation in Light of Scientific Developments”, organized by the Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa, began today over two days at the historic Al Hisn site in Abu Dhabi.

The organization of the forum comes within the framework of the Council’s keenness to establish an accurate scientific methodology in investigating crescent moons that combines legal foundations with modern astronomical data, ensuring that fatwa decisions are issued according to the highest standards of accuracy and reliability, and contributes to unifying the legal authority at the state level, and enhancing societal confidence in the procedures of proof and announcement.

The selection of the Al-Hosn site – as one of the most prominent historical monuments in the country – embodies a symbolic significance of the extension of the Emirati heritage in detecting and observing crescent moons since ancient times, and the connection of this legacy today with the scientific and technical development witnessed by the country, in an image that reflects the integration of originality with modernity, and confirms the UAE’s leadership in employing innovation to serve religious rituals.

The forum includes a knowledge exhibition entitled “The National Heritage in Crescent Sighting,” which reviews historical milestones and national efforts in this field, in addition to the launch of the “Al-Shawaf” drone and modern monitoring techniques, as well as specialized scientific sessions and discussion panels that bring together forensic scholars, astronomers, and technical experts to review the latest methods used in verifying the sighting of the crescent moon, and discuss best institutional practices in the governance of crescent moon sighting work.

The forum will also witness the honoring of entities and partners supporting the monitoring system, in appreciation of their contributions to developing joint work.

The program concludes on its second day with a meeting of the official committee for sighting the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan, headed by His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, Chairman of the Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa, and with the participation of specialists and representatives of judicial authorities, where observatory reports and the results of field monitoring are reviewed before the official decision is announced.

The Council affirmed that the forum represents a national platform for strengthening partnerships, exchanging experiences, and supporting innovation in the field of investigation, thus consolidating the UAE’s position as a pioneering model in employing modern science to serve fatwa work and enhance the quality of community life.
