Radioactive contamination in Iraq… and the concerned teams are intervening

The National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Authority in Iraq announced on Sunday that it had begun, in coordination with the Atomic Energy Commission, pollution treatment operations in the pillar of the Tobji Bridge in Baghdad.

The Commission stated, in a press statement today, that this contamination was detected in one of the pillars of the Tobji Bridge in Baghdad, and removal operations are currently being carried out by the Directorate of Radioactive Waste and Liquidation of Nuclear Facilities.

Muhammad Jassim, Director of the Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Directorate, said, “Field measures included isolating the site, cordoning it off with warning tapes, and restricting entry to the area to authorized persons only, in addition to taking preventive measures to limit the spread of pollution, which included the use of insulating materials and ensuring a safe working environment for the implementing technical teams.”

The Authority confirmed the continuation of its field supervision and monitoring of the progress of work until complete decontamination is completed and the site is returned to its safe condition, stressing that all procedures are implemented in accordance with approved controls and to ensure the protection of citizens, workers and the surrounding environment.
