​The Cooperation Council calls on Iraq to withdraw the list of coordinates from the United Nations because it harms Kuwait’s sovereignty

The Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, called on the Republic of Iraq to withdraw the list of coordinates and map deposited with the United Nations, which includes allegations about Iraqi maritime areas, because those coordinates and map contain a violation of the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait over its maritime areas and water heights, including Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij.

The Secretary-General pointed out the importance of resorting to the rules and principles of international law, and what was stipulated in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of ​​1982, and in accordance with the understandings, agreements, and bilateral memorandums of understanding concluded between the two countries when dealing with such issues and topics.

He also affirmed, according to what was stated in the final statement issued by the Supreme Council of Their Majesties and Highnesses the Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries – may God protect and protect them – in its forty-sixth session, its firm positions and previous decisions regarding Iraq’s respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State of Kuwait, and its categorical rejection of any infringement of the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait over all its lands, islands and highlands, and all of its maritime areas, and the emphasis on commitment to bilateral and international pledges and agreements and all relevant United Nations resolutions.

The Secretary-General stated that the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Republic of Iraq have strong historical relations and close ties based on mutual respect and good neighbourliness, indicating that such allegations do not contribute to strengthening the path of cooperation and bilateral relations between the two sides.

He expressed his aspiration that the Republic of Iraq would take the initiative to review and withdraw the list of coordinates and the map deposited with the United Nations, in a way that enhances mutual trust, supports the stability of relations, and establishes commitment to relevant legal and international principles.​
