المملكة: With technology "A valve within a valve".. Ending the suffering of a seventy-year-old woman without surgical intervention in Mecca

In a medical achievement that reflects the qualitative development in Microcardiac surgeries, a specialized medical team at the Heart Center succeeded in King Abdullah Medical City in the Holy Capital, member Makkah Al-Mukarramah Health Assembly, in ending the suffering of a 70-year-old patient, who was facing severe failure of an old surgical mitral valve.

The specific procedure was to implant a new valve inside the damaged valve via catheter technology, bypassing the risks of traditional open surgery.

The patient arrived at the Medical City suffering from severe shortness of breath and an inability to lead her normal life, as a result of the deterioration of the function of the implanted mitral valve. She was surgically treated 13 years ago.

A safe treatment option

After extensive study by "Heart team" (Heart Team), it was found that open surgery was not suitable due to its advanced age and the high risk associated with surgical re-incision, so the “Valve-in-Valve” technique was adopted as a strategic and safe treatment option.

The treatment plan was based on an advanced technical path, which consisted of creating a precise opening through the atrial septum to reach the target valve, and then inserting the new biovalve through the femoral veins and installing it with extreme precision inside the frame of the old surgical valve.

The medical team ensured the functional efficiency of the new valve without affecting other heart chambers, in a procedure that took a record time compared to traditional operations, which accelerated the pace of recovery.

Medical success and excellence

The operation was a complete success, as the patient left the catheterization room in a stable condition, and witnessed an immediate and tangible improvement in breathing and all vital indicators.

This success embodies the unique level of integration between medical specialties in King Abdullah Medical City, and strengthens its position as a center A leading reference in providing complex cardiac care, in line with the goals of health transformation in the Kingdom and employing the latest global technologies to serve patients.
