China’s manufacturing sector activity contracted for the second month in a row

BEIJING, 4th March, 2017 (WAM) – Economic activity in the manufacturing sector in China contracted for the second month in a row last February, with expectations that reducing US customs duties will contribute to a slight improvement in activity in the coming weeks.

The National Bureau of Statistics in China stated today that the purchasing managers index for the manufacturing sector fell to 49 points, compared to 49.3 points last January, recording its lowest level in four months.

It is noteworthy that an index reading of less than 50 points indicates a contraction in the sector’s economic activity, while a reading of more than 50 points indicates growth in activity.

Last December, the index recorded 50.1 points when it ended 8 consecutive months of contraction, before returning to the contraction cycle again the following month and continuing at a higher pace last month.
