"Abu Dhabi Environment" and"energy" They cooperate to protect biodiversity

Abu Dhabi, 9 March / WAM / The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company “TAQA” signed a sponsorship agreement under which “TAQA” joins the partnership program of the Al Qurum Initiative – Abu Dhabi, and becomes the main and exclusive sponsor of two pioneering environmental initiatives for a period of two years.
The first initiative focuses on implementing the “Automated Monitoring of Biodiversity in Mangrove Habitats” programme, which represents a paradigm shift in methodologies for monitoring coastal ecosystems.
The program relies on developing an innovative system that is the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region, combining artificial intelligence techniques, modern technology, advanced environmental monitoring tools, and community science to study the biodiversity of mangrove trees in natural and rehabilitated ecosystems.
The program aims to study and analyze biodiversity in the natural ecosystems of mangrove habitats, with a focus on biological species – such as fish and crabs – that constitute indicators of the health and stability of these systems, and to measure the success of habitat rehabilitation operations.
The program contributes to providing accurate and immediate data that enhances the effectiveness of environmental protection and planning efforts, and supports making informed decisions to ensure the sustainability of coastal ecosystems in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
TAQA sponsored the 2025 Sea Turtle Release Festival, which was organized by the Authority and is considered one of the most important environmental events in the country. It aims to highlight the importance of preserving marine species, by re-releasing rescued and rehabilitated sea turtles to their natural habitats, and highlighting the efforts made by the Authority and its partners in the field of preserving marine species.
Maitha Mohammed Al Hameli, Director of the Marine Biodiversity Department at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: This partnership represents an important step towards protecting the ecosystems of mangrove habitats, and strengthens the emirate’s leadership in developing and adopting advanced technologies and innovations to monitor species and assess habitat health accurately and immediately. The role of this cooperation is not only limited to enhancing our scientific capabilities, but also provides opportunities to exchange knowledge, scientific research, and achieve a sustainable impact in the field of environmental conservation, which contributes to supporting the existing environmental innovation system. On knowledge and cooperation.
Noel Aoun, Chief Strategy Officer at Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), expressed TAQA’s pride in supporting the Al Qurum-Abu Dhabi initiative as part of their ongoing commitment to maintaining a sustainable environment.
He said, “This cooperation highlights the vital role of science, technology, and community participation in protecting and better understanding our natural environment, and we look forward to moving forward in this important work alongside the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and its partners.”
The Mangrove-Abu Dhabi Initiative aims to consolidate Abu Dhabi’s position as a global center for mangrove conservation, research and innovation. It brings together under its umbrella all projects and programs concerned with the preservation of coastal ecosystems and nature-based solutions in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and provides a platform for regional and international cooperation, in addition to encouraging the establishment of the necessary partnerships between the public and private sectors, as the total number of partners of the Al Qurm – Abu Dhabi Initiative since its launch until now has reached 8 international partners and 15 local partners.
