Rubio signs the decision to classify the Sudanese Brotherhood as a terrorist organization

Today, Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed the decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a foreign terrorist organization, in a move that reflects an escalation in the international position towards the group and its networks linked to the ongoing war in the country. The US State Department deposited the decision today in the US Federal Register, and it will enter into force on Monday, March 16.

According to the notice issued by the US State Department, the decision came after a review of the administrative record of the case and in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury.

Washington concluded that there is a legal basis for applying Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act regarding the designation of foreign terrorist organizations.

The classification includes what the United States describes as the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan, in addition to a number of names associated with it, including the Sudanese Islamic Movement and the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade, which appeared during the ongoing war in the country.

Under this decision, the group is included on the list of foreign terrorist organizations, which means freezing any assets associated with it within the United States, prohibiting financial dealings with it, in addition to imposing sanctions on individuals or entities that provide it with material or logistical support.
