"Sharjah Theater Days" Discuss "Theatrical acting between instinct and experience"

Sharjah, 27 March / WAM / The event “Theatrical Acting between Innateness and Experience” within the cultural program accompanying the 35th session of “Sharjah Theatrical Days” reviewed the path of the theatrical actor between innate beginnings and stages of formation and experience.
The event was attended by festival director Ahmed Bourahima, and a group of Arab artists and academics, Emirati actor and director Ibrahim Salem, and Tunisian academic and theater artist Dr. Hamadi Al-Wahaibi participated in it. It was moderated by Egyptian media personality Iman Montaser.
In his intervention, Ibrahim Salem reviewed his personal experience, recalling his early beginnings and his early passion for acting since childhood, pointing to his experience in school theatre, and the turning point it constituted in his understanding of the essence of acting performance based on honesty and simplicity, away from exaggeration.
He stressed that acting is a continuous journey of self-discovery, and that combining talent, passion, and cognitive research contributes to building an actor capable of leaving a distinctive artistic impact.
Dr. Hamadi Al-Wahaibi addressed the problem of the balance between instinct and experience, asking about the limits of each in shaping the actor’s performance, pointing out that talent remains an essential element that cannot be replaced by academic study alone, while knowledge and training contribute to developing and refining this talent.
He explained that theatrical workshops represent an important space for developing the actor’s skills, stressing the pivotal role of the director in directing the performance and achieving harmony within the theatrical show, noting that varying levels of performance are often linked to the mechanisms of managing actors.
The evening witnessed interventions from a number of artists and academics, which addressed issues related to performance methods, most notably the relationship between internal and external expression in acting, where Salem pointed out that performance begins from the inside and is reflected externally, while Al-Wahaibi stressed that the acting process is based on the integration of the internal and technical dimensions.
The discussions also touched on the differences between innate and spontaneous performance on the one hand, and performance based on experience and knowledge accumulation on the other hand, with reference to Arab artistic experiences that succeeded in establishing their presence based on talent, in contrast to the growing influence of modern curricula in training actors.
