Negotiations between Washington, Iran and mediators regarding a 45-day ceasefire
Axios quoted four informed American, Israeli and Middle Eastern sources as saying that the United States, Iran and a group of mediators from the region are discussing the terms of a possible 45-day ceasefire that could lead to a permanent end to the war.
Reuters has not yet been able to verify the accuracy of what was stated in the report. Neither the White House nor the US State Department responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
The report indicated that the mediators are discussing the terms of a two-stage agreement, with the first stage being a potential ceasefire for 45 days during which a permanent end to the war will be negotiated.
The report said that the second phase would be an agreement to end the war.
He added that it is possible to extend the ceasefire if more time is required for negotiations.
US President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday that the deadline he gave Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz or suffer attacks on vital infrastructure expires on Tuesday evening.
