"Emirates Cycling" Secondly, in the 3rd stage of the Tawaf "Itzolia Basque Country"
Madrid, April 9, 2026 – Spaniard Igor Arrieta, from the Emirates
Arrieta came in second place behind Frenchman Axel Lawrence, a rider for the Ineos Grenadiers team, who sealed the win in the final meters of a decisive uphill finish, while Eritrean Natnael Tesfasion came third.
The stage witnessed strong competition from its start, as Arrieta succeeded in being part of the main escape group that formed early, before imposing himself as one of the most prominent racers at the front.
As the race entered its decisive stages, Arrieta intensified his attacks on the hills, succeeding in separating with Lawrence from the rest of the group, and forming the lead duo until the final kilometers. The two riders cooperated to maintain the gap with the main group, which ensured them direct competition to win the stage.
In the final meters, Arrieta tried to surprise his rival with an early start, but Lawrence showed his superiority in final speed, seizing first place shortly before the finish line.
Arrieta also received the award for best combative rider in the stage, in recognition of his aggressive performance throughout the race, in addition to his climb to the podium.
