The arrest of a cell linked to the Lebanese Hezbollah that targeted the assassination of a religious figure in Damascus

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced today that the Counter-Terrorism Department, in cooperation with the Internal Security Command in the Damascus countryside, was able to thwart a sabotage plan that was targeting the security of the capital, Damascus.
The Ministry said, in a statement, “The operation was the result of careful security follow-up of suspicious movements inside the capital, as the specialized units succeeded in monitoring a woman within a cell while she was trying to carry out an act of sabotage by planting an explosive device in front of the house of a religious figure in the vicinity of the Marian Church in the Bab Touma area.”
She added, “Thanks to proactive security efforts, speed of implementation and high readiness, the units were able to neutralize the danger and dismantle the device before it exploded, without any injuries or damage, and to arrest all five members of the cell.”
She pointed out that “preliminary investigations revealed that the cell was linked to the Lebanese Hezbollah, and that its members received specialized military training outside the country, which included skills in planting explosive devices.”
She explained that investigations are still ongoing to uncover the full circumstances of the case and the parties associated with it, in preparation for referring them to the duly competent judiciary.
