A new book reveals funny and hidden aspects of Elizabeth II’s personality

A recent book titled “The Queen and Her Chiefs,” by author Susan Page, revealed unknown aspects of the personality of the late Queen of Britain, Elizabeth II, indicating that she had a hidden sense of humor and a remarkable ability to imitate personalities, which she sometimes used in funny situations, even with First Ladies of the United States.

According to what was stated in the book, the Queen, who passed away in 2022, was adept at imitating others, as it was said that she gently mocked the American First Lady, Melania Trump, portraying her as a “silent and isolated” character, similar to the style of the Swedish actress, Greta Garbo, in one of her most famous roles.

According to the new book, she is said to have cheerfully muttered the phrase, “I want to be alone,” quoting Garbo’s famous line from the 1932 film “Grand Hotel.”

Queen Elizabeth met with US President Donald Trump twice during his first term (2017-2021), accompanied by his wife Melania. The first was a working visit in July 2018 at Windsor Castle, and the second was an official state visit in June 2019.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his admiration for the Queen, praising her tact and warm reception of him and his wife inside the royal palaces.

In another situation, it was mentioned that during a trip to California, the Queen imitated another American First Lady, in reference to Nancy Reagan, as her looks filled with admiration for her husband, Ronald Reagan, were the subject of gentle mockery of the Queen, according to what was stated in the book “The Queen and Her Presidents.”

Dignity and tact

Despite these funny situations, Queen Elizabeth maintained her public image as a person characterized by dignity and high tact, as she interacted diplomatically with 14 American presidents over the course of her long reign, starting with President Harry Truman and ending with Trump in his first term.

Her first distinguished friendship with an American president was with John F. Kennedy, given their close age, in whom she found frankness and kindness. After their meeting, the relationship between them developed into an exchange of regular letters, characterized by a friendly and spontaneous nature, that dealt with various social and life topics. In 1962, the Queen invited First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to a luncheon during her private visit to London.

“The Queen followed that up with a friendly, kind handwritten letter to President Kennedy describing how much they had enjoyed the time she spent with the American First Lady,” said Susan Page, author of “The Queen and Her Chiefs.”

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the Queen was unable to attend the funeral due to her pregnancy with Prince Edward, so she sent her husband, Prince Philip, to represent her.

After the funeral, it was said that Jacqueline Kennedy found Prince Philip lying on the floor of the White House playing with John Jr., who was three years old at the time, in a touching human scene.

An unusual experience

A strong and fast friendship also developed between Queen Elizabeth and President Ronald Reagan, strengthened by their shared passion for equestrian sports.

During her visit to the United States in 1983, the Queen had an unusual experience when she dined in a public restaurant, for the first time, the famous “Trader Vic’s” restaurant in San Francisco, where she tried the restaurant’s special drink, and kept a fortune cookie message inside her bag.

Upon Reagan’s death, the Queen sent a handwritten letter of condolence to Nancy Reagan, and commissioned Charles III, who was a prince, to deliver it personally during the funeral ceremony. The American First Lady kept this letter among a collection of condolence letters she received from world leaders.

Remain silent

During one of Trump’s visits to Britain, he tried to lure the Queen into talking about her political preferences. He asked her which American president was closest to her, but she politely avoided answering. He also asked her about her opinion of her grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, after they moved to the American state of California, but she remained silent and did not reveal her feelings. In a later development, Trump became the first American president to be received by King Charles III after he assumed the throne, in September 2025, with King Charles and his wife Camilla making an official visit to The United States during the period from April 27 to 30.
