Dubai Roads awards the contract for the Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl and Al Safa streets development project

The Roads and Transport Authority has awarded a contract for the project to develop Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Street, develop Al Wasl Street from its intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to its intersection with 2nd December Street, develop Al Safa Street, from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Road, and develop seven intersections on Jumeirah Road.
The project includes the implementation of bridges and tunnels with a total length of about 11,000 metres, in addition to the surface expansion of roads. The project, upon completion, will contribute to increasing the capacity of Umm Suqeim Street to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, and increasing the capacity of Al Wasl and Al Safa Streets to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, for each street, in implementation of the directives of the wise leadership, in accelerating the pace of work in developing infrastructure projects for the road network, and raising Its capacity, to enhance the flow of traffic in the Emirate of Dubai, to keep pace with the comprehensive development witnessed by the emirate, to accommodate the needs of urban development and population growth, and to achieve quality of life for the residents and visitors of Dubai.

The project goes beyond the concept of expanding and developing streets, to add a creative and aesthetic element to the area, by creating improved pedestrian corridors and a bicycle path, to ensure safer and easier roads for everyone, in addition to creating public squares (boulevards) and urban spaces to enhance community interaction and provide vibrant and comprehensive urban environments.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said: The project comes within the framework of an integrated plan developed by the Authority to develop roads in the region, which includes the development of Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl, and Al Safa streets, and serves vital areas that include many modern tourist facilities, including beaches, hotels, luxury restaurants, residential areas, educational institutions, and centers for tourism, artistic, and sporting activities and events, residential and commercial areas, and luxury hotels and restaurants, with an estimated population of more than two million people.

Al Tayer said: “Developing the infrastructure of the road and transportation network is a major driver of the economy and a key factor in supporting urban growth and enhancing Dubai’s attractiveness for investment and business. He pointed out that developing vital axes contributes to raising the efficiency of the traffic network, reducing travel time, and improving the flow of movement, which reflects positively on the productivity of individuals and the efficiency of various economic sectors.”

He added: “Achieving the smooth flow of traffic in the emirate requires continuous and integrated development of the road network, in parallel with the expansion of the public transportation system and the adoption of smart solutions. He stressed that the authority is proceeding according to a comprehensive plan to develop a number of vital hubs in the region, keeping pace with population growth and urban expansion, enhancing the daily transportation experience of Dubai’s residents and visitors, and consecrating the emirate’s leadership in the field of global infrastructure.”

Umm Suqeim Street
He added: “The Umm Suqeim Street development project, from its intersection with Jumeirah Road to its intersection with Al Khail Road, is part of a comprehensive plan to develop the Umm Suqeim-Al Qudra axis, which extends from its intersection with Jumeirah Road, to its intersection with Emirates Road, all the way to Al Qudra Street. The axis serves many vital residential and development areas, and the project contributes to strengthening the connection between four strategic axes in the Emirate of Dubai, which are: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. And Emirates Road, increasing the street’s capacity to reach 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, achieving traffic flow, and reducing the travel time in the section extending between Jumeirah and Al Khail Streets, from 20 minutes to 6 minutes, and serving many residential and development areas, the most important of which are Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha, and Al Quoz, with an estimated population of more than two million people.

6 intersections
The project includes the development of 6 intersections on Umm Suqeim Street with Jumeirah Road, Al Wasl Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Al Khail Road. It includes the implementation of four bridges and two tunnels with a total length of 4,100 metres. A tunnel will be implemented at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and Jumeirah Street, with a capacity of two lanes in each direction, with a surface intersection governed by traffic lights. A tunnel will also be implemented at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street with Al Wasl Street, with a capacity of two lanes, in the direction of Sheikh Street. Zayed to Jumeirah Road, providing free and direct surface movement in the direction of Sheikh Zayed Road.

It also includes the implementation of two bridges at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street with Sheikh Zayed Road, to eliminate traffic interference at the current intersection. The project also includes adding one lane on Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with First Al Khail Street to Al Asayel Street, where the number of lanes will increase to five lanes in each direction. The development of the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street with Al Khail Street includes the implementation and expansion of two bridge connections, the first from Al Khail Street to Al Quoz Industrial Area, and the second to serve traffic from Umm Suqeim Street. To Al Khail Street towards Deira area.

Al Wasl Street
The Al Wasl Street development project extends from its intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to its intersection with 2nd December Street, over a length of 15 kilometres, and includes expanding the street from two lanes in each direction to three lanes in each direction, and developing seven intersections on Al Wasl Street with Al Thanyah, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Umm Amara, Al Orouba, Al Hudaiba and 2nd December Streets, by making surface improvements to the intersections, in addition to implementing five tunnels with a length of 3,850 meters. The project contributes to reducing travel time along Al Wasl Road by 50%, and increasing the capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The project includes implementing improvement works at the intersection of Al Wasl Street with Al Thanyah Street, and implementing a one-way tunnel at the intersection of Al Wasl Street with Al Manara Street, with a capacity of three lanes, from which two lanes branch out in the direction from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Road, and two lanes in the direction from Sheikh Zayed Road to Umm Suqeim Street, with a capacity of 4,800 vehicles per hour, in addition to a tunnel on Umm Al Sheif Street, with a capacity of two lanes in the direction from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Road, along 650 meters, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. The project also includes the implementation of a one-way tunnel at the intersection of Al Wasl Street with Umm Amara Street towards 2nd December Street, with a length of 605 metres, with a capacity of two lanes, and a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The project also includes the implementation of a one-way tunnel at the intersection of Al Wasl Street and Al Orouba Street, in the direction of Jumeirah Street, with a length of 565 metres, a capacity of two lanes, and a capacity of 1,400 vehicles per hour.

Al Safa Street
The Al Safa Street development project extends from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to its intersection with Al Wasl, with a length of 1,500 metres. It includes the implementation of two bridges and two tunnels with a total length of 3,120 metres, the expansion of surface roads, and the improvement of intersections and traffic signals. The project contributes to reducing the travel time on Al Safa Street, from 12 minutes to 3 minutes, and increasing the street’s capacity from 6,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, to 12,000 vehicles. per hour in both directions.

The project includes the implementation of two bridges, the first of which serves traffic coming from Al Wasl Road towards Sheikh Zayed Road and the Financial Center and consists of four lanes, 1,005 meters long, with an estimated capacity of about 6,400 vehicles per hour. The other bridge serves traffic coming from Satwa Street towards Sheikh Zayed Street and the Financial Center, with a capacity of two lanes, 360 meters long, and a capacity of 2,800 vehicles per hour.
The project also includes the implementation of two tunnels, the first for those coming from Sheikh Zayed Road and the Financial Center towards Al Wasl Street, with a capacity of two lanes, a length of 1,005 meters, and a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour, while the second tunnel is located at the intersection of Al Wasl Street with Al Safa Street, and is 750 meters long, with a capacity of two lanes in each direction, and its capacity is estimated at about 6,400 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The project includes expanding the street from three lanes in each direction (governed by traffic lights) to four lanes in each direction. It also includes developing special paths for pedestrians and bicycles, urban spaces, and landscaping.
When completed, the project will contribute to enhancing the flow of traffic coming from the upper lane of the Financial Center Street and Sheikh Zayed Road, towards Al Safa Street, all the way to Al Wasl Road, and vice versa. It will enhance the connectivity between a number of vital road axes in the region, in addition to raising the level of traffic safety.

Jumeirah Street
The project includes developing seven intersections on Jumeirah Road with Al Thanyah, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Al Orouba, 39 B, Al Hudaiba, and 2nd of December Streets, by implementing a package of surface improvements aimed at increasing capacity, improving the flow of traffic along the street, and reducing congestion at the intersections.
