Strait of Hormuz – IMO Secretary-General calls for de-escalation

He reiterated that the organization remains the ideal platform for reaching a multilateral consensus on international shipping, adding that he is in constant communication with the relevant authorities and stakeholders regarding the situation in the strait. He urged all parties to work to reduce the escalation.
His statements came today, Monday, during the opening of the eighty-fourth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee at the organization’s headquarters in the British capital, London.
This session, which continues until Friday, aims to achieve a convergence of views between countries in order to make tangible progress on the IMO’s framework for reaching net-zero emissions in the field of international shipping.
Dominguez had expressed his concern about the escalation of accidents in the Strait of Hormuz, warning of the increasing risks threatening navigation and the safety of sailors, noting that at least 29 ships had been subjected to attacks in the region, while 10 sailors were reportedly killed.
