Arsenal knocks Atletico Madrid out of Europe…and qualifies for the final for the first time in 20 years
Arsenal qualified for the Champions League final for the second time in its history, and the first after a 20-year absence, after a 1-0 victory over its guest, Atletico Madrid, on Tuesday.
Bukayo Saka scored the London team’s only goal in the 44th minute of the match held at the Emirates Stadium, giving the English team a 2-1 lead on aggregate.
The two teams tied 1-1 in the first leg, which was held last Wednesday at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital, Madrid.
Arsenal, which is seeking to win the European title for the first time in its history, awaits the winner of the match between defending champion Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the final match, which will be held on May 30 in Budapest.
Arsenal lost to Barcelona 1-2 in its first appearance in the Champions League final in 2006.
On the other hand, Atletico Madrid failed to qualify for the Champions League final for the fourth time in its history after losing three previous finals in 1974, 2014 and 2016.
