American officials suspect an Iranian cyber attack on American fuel systems

US officials suspect Iranian hackers are behind a series of hacks into systems that monitor the amount of fuel in storage tanks serving gas stations in several states.
Sources told CNN that the responsible hackers took advantage of the tanks’ automatic measuring systems, which were connected to the Internet and not protected by passwords, which in some cases allowed them to manipulate the display readings of the tanks, but not the actual fuel levels inside them.
The cyber intrusions are not known to have caused physical damage or injuries, but the breaches have raised safety concerns, because access to the tanks’ metering system could theoretically allow hackers to make fuel leaks undetectable, according to private sector experts and US officials.
Sources familiar with the investigation said that Iran’s history of targeting fuel tank systems is one of the reasons it is the prime suspect.
But she warned that the US government may not be able to definitively identify who is responsible due to the lack of digital forensic evidence left by the hackers.
