Abu Dhabi, May 21, WAM / ADNOC announced the successful operation of the “Heavy Duty Inspection Robot” from Taurup at the Al Taweelah Natural Gas Compression Station.
The robot will carry out routine inspections in dangerous areas and conditions without exposing human personnel working on site to any risks.
The robot is currently being used to conduct initial field inspections on its own, allowing ADNOC engineers to identify potential gas leaks, monitor abnormal thermal spots, and other risks, thus contributing to enhancing safety standards. The robot is designed to operate in harsh industrial environments, and is equipped with an integrated set of advanced sensors, including 3D detection and ranging technology (LiDAR), and thermal cameras with a viewing angle of up to 360 degrees.
Meanwhile, ADNOC announced plans to expand its robotics program by participating in the development of the first “heavy-duty operational robot” in the energy sector, which will include the same vision technologies provided by the “Inspection Robot” from “Taurup”, in addition to the ability to lift and hold industrial equipment.
This robot is being developed within the Argos industrial joint venture in cooperation with Equinor, NetZero Technology Center, Petrobras, Total Energies, Saft and Taurup.
The robot will be able to operate in a temperature range between -20 and 60 degrees Celsius, and it can be operated remotely or operate autonomously, allowing maintenance work and technical interventions to be carried out efficiently and safely. It is expected that the robot will begin operating by the end of 2026.

This step represents a model of purposeful innovation, which contributes to Enhancing safety, reducing emissions, improving performance, and supporting the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and the Robotics and Automation Agenda.”
For his part, Matthias Biegel, Managing Director of Taurup, appreciated ADNOC’s contribution to the Argos joint industrial project, which added its long experience in working in difficult environments, including extreme heat in the Middle East, an important regional dimension to the project. Thanks to the UAE and ADNOC’s great focus on digital transformation and robotics, we have succeeded in applying advanced technology in ways that enhance safety and efficiency, while supporting our common ambition to reduce emissions through the expansion of the use of robots.
It is worth noting that these achievements support ADNOC’s integrated strategies in the fields of advanced technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, health, safety and environment, by combining monitoring tools supported by artificial intelligence and the use of robots to reduce exposure to risks and raise the efficiency and reliability of operations.
Tools such as the HSE Cockpit.ai solution contribute to reducing safety-related incidents by 30% by providing real-time visibility that helps prevent incidents before they occur.
ADNOC uses robots and drones to carry out inspections in hazardous environments, monitor emissions, and respond to incidents on land, at sea, and in the air, including operations within hazardous areas and closed spaces.
