World Environment Day / The UAE consolidates its leadership in sustainability and confronting climate challenges

Abu Dhabi, 5 June / WAM / The UAE celebrates “World Environment Day”, which falls on June 5 of each year, amid its firm commitment to promoting environmental sustainability through many pioneering initiatives and solutions that ensure the protection of natural resources, the preservation of biodiversity, and the dissemination of environmentally friendly practices, in line with the national pillars concerned with achieving climate neutrality by the year 2050.

The event, which is being held this year under the slogan “Inspired by nature. For the climate. For our future,” coincides with the UAE’s continued strengthening of its pioneering role in supporting and stimulating international efforts to confront the worsening challenges of climate change and its negative effects.

The UAE is implementing an integrated policy to enhance environmental sustainability, which includes many national strategies and initiatives, such as the “Emirates Strategic Initiative to Strive to Achieve Climate Neutrality by 2050,” the UAE National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050, the National Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, and the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2022-2030.

Since 2012, the country has also adopted the green economy methodology as a sustainable development path through the “Emirates Green Development Strategy,” in addition to launching the “National Program for Adaptation to Climate Change.”

In 2026, the UAE will continue its series of qualitative initiatives and projects in the areas of environmental protection, promoting clean energy sources, and innovation in green technologies, which enhances its global position in sustainability.

The seventh national report on biodiversity in the UAE, which was approved by the Council of Ministers in March 2026, showed that the number of approved reserves had increased to 55 terrestrial and marine reserves, covering the equivalent of 19.04% of the total area of the country. Last April, an Amiri decree was issued regarding the establishment of the “Wadi Al Qarha” reserve in the Emirate of Sharjah.

The report indicated tangible progress in protecting endangered species and improving their condition, through the implementation of integrated programs for protection, propagation, habitat management, and international cooperation. Coastal and marine systems have also witnessed remarkable progress through the national carbon sequestration project, which aims to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030.

The UAE issued a new law to regulate and monitor international trade in endangered animals and plants. It also launched, through the Mohammed bin Zayed Fund for the Conservation of Species and the Mubadala Foundation, an international initiative to protect dugongs and seagrass habitats in the UAE and four other countries.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi launched the “Hamdan Bin Zayed for the World’s Richest Seas” initiative, with the aim of doubling the emirate’s fish stocks by 2030, as part of efforts aimed at enhancing marine productivity and protecting resources.

Dubai adopted the “Al Layan Oasis” project, which covers one million square meters and includes a vast natural lake, to highlight the desert environment and enhance awareness of sustainability and quality of life, while the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah recorded the discovery of 4 new types of spiders, which reflects the richness of environmental diversity and scientific research in the country.

The UAE has taken strict measures to confront excessive consumption of plastic bags in daily life and reduce their harmful effects on the environment and other living organisms.

In this context, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi revealed notable results since the launch of the single-use plastics policy in the emirate in 2020, including avoiding the use of more than 470 million plastic bags, with a decrease of up to 95% recorded in the main sales outlets.

The UAE announced the “National Agricultural Initiative to Adopt Climate Smart Crops”, in a strategic step led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in cooperation with the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA).

The initiative relies on four strategic crops adapted to the Emirati environment, led by millet (foxtail and white) and sorghum, which represent a practical solution to the challenges of water scarcity, as they consume up to 50% less water compared to traditional grains.

The launch of the initiative came at a time when the UAE continues to lead efforts to enhance global water security, through pioneering initiatives such as the “Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative”, the “Emirates Suqia” Foundation, and the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, while the country is preparing to welcome the world to the “United Nations Water Conference” next December, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal.
