"Emirates Water and Electricity" It aims to reduce carbon emissions by 46% by 2035
Abu Dhabi, 5 June / WAM / Emirates Water and Electricity Company celebrates World Environment Day 2026, by highlighting the importance of advancing climate action in a measurable manner and effectively preserving the country’s natural habitats.
The world celebrates World Environment Day 2026, under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme, under the slogan “Climate Action Today” in a global call to address the urgent challenges related to climate change and loss of biodiversity, and to strongly emphasize the importance of securing a sustainable future based on reducing carbon emissions and building a strategic relationship with the natural environment.
This integrated approach is directly in line with the mission of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, to accelerate the UAE’s transition towards a sustainable and carbon-free future, as the company is leading the transition towards renewable energy and low-carbon reverse osmosis water desalination through a set of strategic plans aimed at achieving a reduction in total carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 46% by 2035 compared to 2019 levels, and meeting 40% of electricity demand through solar energy.
Adel Al Saeedi, Senior Vice President of Project Development at Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said on this occasion that World Environment Day confirms that climate action goes beyond simply reducing emissions, as it requires achieving a radical transition in the water and energy system in harmony with nature. The company contributes a major role in removing carbon from water and energy supplies in Abu Dhabi by implementing world-leading projects in the field of renewable energy, in addition to its cooperation with the Emirates Nature Society, with the aim of protecting vital habitats and enhancing the country’s resilience in the face of climate change.
He added that by integrating sustainable infrastructure with scientifically based environmental conservation efforts, we ensure the prosperity of our economy and natural heritage in the long term.
Emirates Water and Electricity Company continues to achieve an unprecedented expansion in renewable energy infrastructure facilities, by working to increase the production capacity of solar energy in Abu Dhabi to reach approximately 17.5 gigawatts by 2030 compared to 990 megawatts in 2020, and with the operation of some of the largest independent solar power plants in the world, the company expects the installed solar capacity to exceed 30 gigawatts by 2035, and the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation will decrease by 51% to reach To 162 kilograms per megawatt hour by 2030, compared to 335 kilograms per megawatt hour in 2019.
The company’s climate action efforts extend beyond physical infrastructure. Through its partnership with the Emirates Nature Foundation, a leading environmental conservation organization that works in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature, the company is working directly to expand the impact of environmental conservation efforts across the country, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening the ability to adapt to climate change.
This partnership supports comprehensive efforts in the areas of nature and wildlife protection, climate action, green economy, food and water security, and activating the role of civil society. The company has joined the Emirates Climate Action Alliance (UACA), so that its employees participate in the “Leaders of Change” program of the Emirates Nature Society, through specialized workshops and field trips to preserve the environment that contribute to supporting the restoration of vital natural habitats.
It is noteworthy that the efforts of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company in accelerating the deployment of renewable energy, advanced technologies, and strategic environmental partnerships fundamentally contribute to strengthening a flexible and sustainable system, which directly supports the country’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. It also reflects the main objectives of World Environment Day, which aim to reconsider and redesign the systems that support environmental sustainability.
