“Amouri” ends the basketball season with 130 successful threes

The winger of Shabab Al-Ahly Club and the national basketball team, Omar Al-Amri, known as “Amori the Basketball,” expressed his happiness with the exceptional season he presented, after he scored 130 successful three-pointers over the four competitions that spanned last season (the Federation Cup, the General League, the Emirates Cup, and the Vice President’s Cup), describing it as the best in his sporting career.

Al Ameri told Emirates Today: “I feel proud of the performance I presented throughout the past season, and my success in scoring 130 successful three-pointers, in addition to breaking the record for the largest number of three-pointers recorded in one match, after I succeeded in scoring 18 three-pointers against Al Dhafra in the quarter-finals of the Vice President’s Cup late last month.”

He added: “This number gave me the opportunity to break my previous record recorded last April against Al Wahda in the quarter-finals of the Emirates Cup, when I scored 14 successful three-pointers, an exceptional rate at the single-match level that no other player has succeeded in reaching this season.”

He explained: “Achieving high percentages of three-pointers requires a great commitment to training, which is what I was keen on, in addition to continuous work on developing physical fitness, because of its direct role in raising the level of concentration when executing these shots, which have become a decisive element in modern basketball, and one of the keys to achieving victory, so I consider the current season the best in my career.”

He continued: “The numbers I achieved give me a feeling of pride, especially since I was able to outperform many of the most prominent three-pointers from foreign professionals included in the league’s clubs, and I was very close to finishing the season in the lead, had it not been for me being only five shots behind Al-Bataeh’s American professional, Patrick Terence.”

He added: “This season, I scored 456 points, 390 of which came from three-pointers. These numbers could have been higher and would have given the national player an unprecedented achievement of being at the top of the most successful players in scoring from beyond the arc, had it not been for some special circumstances that affected my focus in a number of matches.”

Regarding the impact of his move to Shabab Al-Ahly in developing his level, Al-Amiri said: “I spent many years with Sharjah and achieved many achievements, especially under the leadership of the able coach Abdul Hamid Ibrahim, who is credited with giving me confidence and developing my abilities in three-point shooting.”

He added: “Moving to Shabab Al-Ahly last season raised the level of challenge for me, in light of the presence of a distinguished group of players who possess great scoring abilities from beyond the arc, led by the team’s playmaker and top scorer, American DeShawndre Washington.”

Al-Amiri stressed his aspiration to continue to shine in three-pointers, and to put his experience in the service of the national team, which awaits an important qualification in the Asian qualifiers next August, before returning with Shabab Al-Ahly to participate in the regional tournaments that qualify for the AFC Champions League finals.

He concluded by saying: “I extend my thanks to my father, Captain Khaled Al-Amri, who played the biggest role in my reaching this level. I also thank everyone who supported me within Shabab Al-Ahly Club, led by the team manager, Captain Zayed Khwaidem, the team’s manager, the former star Ali Abbas, and the assistant coach, Saeed Ateeq, who provided me with great support throughout the season.”
