World Cup stadium workers threaten to strike before the US national team match

Workers at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles voted in favor of organizing a strike to demand better wages, just one week before the stadium hosted the first match for the American team in the World Cup, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Bloomberg said that, according to the Unite Here Local 11 union, the strike decision was supported by 96% of the members working at the stadium, after labor negotiations with Legends Global (the contractor responsible for managing food and beverage services at the stadium) faltered. Negotiations are expected to resume next Monday.

The union represents about two thousand workers in the stadium’s food services sector, including food and beverage service workers, dishwashers, chefs, and temporary employment workers during, during, and after events. Legends did not immediately comment on this development.

It is noteworthy that “Sophie Stadium”, which is the main stadium for the “Los Angeles Rams” and “Los Angeles Chargers” teams in the American Football League, will host eight matches during the World Cup.

Ticket prices for the upcoming match between the United States and Paraguay, scheduled for June 12, start at $2,000. The next match will be held on June 15 and will bring together the Iranian and New Zealand teams.
