Austria passes a law to accelerate the pace of expansion and investment in renewable energy projects

VIENNA, June 14, 2017 (WAM) – The Parliament of Austria approved the Law on Accelerating the Expansion of Renewable Energy, the main component of the energy policy reform agenda, to facilitate procedures and accelerate the establishment of renewable energy production projects in a more sustainable manner legally.
Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Austrian Minister of Economy and Energy, described the new law as an advanced step that strengthens Austria’s position as an investment destination. He appreciated the law’s role in accelerating and simplifying the approval procedures for energy projects by unifying responsibilities and establishing clearer mechanisms and procedures. He said: “We are adopting a concrete strategic policy.”
The new Energy Law “EABG” aims to accelerate the implementation of wind energy, solar photovoltaic, hydroelectric, geothermal, electricity grid, and energy storage technologies, and simplify procedures to avoid delays in issuing the necessary permits for establishing energy infrastructure projects.
Austria is working to achieve the goals of the expansion plan for renewable energy projects by seeking to increase renewable energy production to 30 terawatt-hours by 2030, and reaching 40 terawatt-hours by 2035.
The ruling party considered the Energy Acceleration Law a “quantum shift” in energy policy, moving the transformation process in the energy sector to the implementation stage, and enhancing security of supply.
