"Mud palaces" On the northern borders…evidence of the genius of Najdi architecture

stands in the northern border region are living evidence of the genius of s, where simple local clay materials were transformed into fortified structures that withstood the elements of time and erosion for many decades, to stand out today as unique architectural models that attract attention and provide an inspiring example of sustainable engineering and defensive architecture in the desert environment.

It embodies heritage palaces and forts built of mud mixed with straw and mud of a golden-yellow color, and built on solid rock bases to protect them from Humidity and rainwater are an integrated urban philosophy that enabled Arab people in ancient times to adapt to harsh desert conditions, by employing local resources with high efficiency and investing in their natural characteristics in construction and stability.

Heritage Landmarks

The most prominent of these areThe historic King Abdulaziz Palace in the village of Lina (south of Rafha in the Northern Border Region), built in 1354-1355 AH, on an area estimated at approximately (4,320) square metres, which still stands tall in the face of the vicissitudes of time, and bears witness to successive historical stages that the region has witnessed.

The palace, with its distinctive architectural style, reflects the human ability to adapt to the desert environment and harness its elements. In creating buildings that combine function, beauty and durability.

The ingenuity of Najdi architecture

The palace, built of rammed clay and local stone, is distinguished by its stepped walls with a conical pyramidal shape, as its base expands clearly and then gradually decreases as it rises to the top, in a structural design that reflects the ingenuity of traditional Najdi architecture.

And prominent at the top are palm trunks that were used as structural elements and means of natural ventilation at the same time, while spreading Narrow openings in the walls played defensive and surveillance roles, thus enhancing the building’s efficiency and security functions.

Distinctive urban planning

King Abdulaziz Palace in historic Lina was designed according to a distinctive urban planning, with a wide courtyard in the middle overlooking the various rooms, sitting rooms, and facilities, while its southern facade is topped by a main gate made of wood.

And its western facade includes a side gate. The palace also contains a water well, a mosque, and facilities dedicated to horses, in addition to a section for private affairs and housing, while the Grand Majlis is one of its most prominent main facilities.

Adobe Building

The characteristics of clay building confirm its environmental and sustainability superiority, as its walls are characterized by a high ability to thermally insulate, which contributes to maintaining moderate temperatures inside the building. The atmosphere remains cooler during the summer and warmer in the winter.

The pyramidal shape of the walls also contributes to the efficient distribution of structural loads, and gives the building a greater ability to resist winds and sandstorms, which explains the continued reliance on this urban style across successive generations.

The northern border region is full of many archaeological and heritage sites of historical value, as it includes more than 364 archaeological sites registered in the National Heritage Register, according to a report. The Heritage Authority issued last April, in addition to 39 urban heritage sites and four historical mosques, distributed over an area exceeding 133 thousand square kilometers, according to the Authority’s report for the second half of 2023 AD.
