Jazan architecture…an experience inspired by the identity of the place and its geographical and cultural diversity


The Jazan On World Architecture Day – which falls on July 1st every year – through an urban experience inspired by Jazan Region Municipality, through the Saudi Architecture Unit, implementing an initiative "Saudi architecture" Launched by the Kingdom, which aims to consolidate the national urban identity, through architectural styles derived from the geographical, climatic and cultural characteristics of each region, as the initiative includes 19 architectural styles across the Kingdom.
While the Jazan region embraces 4 main styles that reflect the diversity of its environments, including: Tihama Coast architecture, Tihama foothills architecture, Sarawat Mountains architecture, and Farasan Islands architecture.

Highlighting personality. Location

According to the official spokesman for the secretariat, M. Fahd Al-Ahmari, the four architectural styles in the region came as an extension of Jazan’s natural, cultural and urban peculiarity, and contribute to highlighting the character of the place and preserving its authentic architectural elements, while adapting them to the requirements of modern development. In the coastal plains, the architecture reflects… "Tihama Coast" Features of simplicity and harmony with the surrounding environment, and is based on 3 styles: traditional, transitional, and contemporary, and is applied in the city of Jizan and the governorates of Sabya, Abu Arish, Samtah, and Damad.
He pointed out that architecture "The slopes of Tihama"It is characterized by designs that take privacy and climatic conditions into account, through small and limited openings, and the use of local materials such as stone and plaster.
In addition to relying on courtyards and balconies as basic elements in the design, he highlighted that this style, which also includes traditional, transitional, and contemporary classifications, is found in the governorates of Harub, Al-Aidabi, and Al-Arda, and reflects the close relationship between architecture and the graded mountainous environment.

He indicated that architecture "Sarawat Mountains"It stands out as an extension of the mountainous urban identity, as it relies on preserving the local character while developing it according to contemporary design concepts, and is divided into styles. "Traditional, transitional and contemporary"It is spread across the governorates of Al-Dayer, Fayfa, and Al-Reith, embodying the architectural heritage for which those governorates are famous.

Enhancing urban identity
