"Kalima Reading Club ".. Investing in knowledge and developing the skills of future generations

Abu Dhabi, 5 July / WAM / The “Kalima Reading Club” is one of the most prominent pioneering cultural initiatives launched by the “Kalima” Translation Project of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center in 2018, with the aim of consolidating reading as a sustainable community practice, enhancing the presence of the Arabic language in daily life, and turning the book into a constant companion for various segments of society.

With the advent of summer vacation, the importance of the club becomes apparent as a knowledge and cultural platform that allows children, youth, and families to invest their time in quality activities that enrich thought, develop skills, and expand horizons of knowledge.

Last June, the club, in cooperation with various government institutions and cultural entities, organized a series of reading sessions targeting various segments of society in a number of locations in Abu Dhabi, confirming its approach based on reaching readers wherever they are, and expanding the circle of community participation in cultural action.

The activities included sessions dedicated to children in cooperation with the “Kinokuniya” Library and the “Liwa Education Foundation”, in addition to accompanying workshops aimed at developing imagination and enhancing children’s communication and thinking skills. These activities gain special importance during the summer vacation, as they provide educational and entertaining content that contributes to building the child’s personality and developing his passion for reading from a young age.

The club also organized sessions to discuss various literary and intellectual works, including the novel “The Seductive Years” by Emirati writer Maryam Al Zarouni, and the book “The Dilemma of Happiness” by Ziad Murrar, in addition to other cultural sessions discussing translated and literary works that contribute to enriching the intellectual dialogue among the participants, and enhance their ability to analyze, express opinions, and exchange ideas.

The importance of the Kalima Reading Club is not limited to organizing book discussion sessions, but rather goes beyond that to building an integrated reading community that consolidates the values of dialogue, openness, and continuous learning. Reading in the concept of the club is not an isolated individual activity, but rather an interactive group experience that brings together readers around different cognitive ideas and issues, and gives them a space for expression, participation, and exchange of experiences.

The club’s activity is part of an integrated system of initiatives implemented by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center to promote sustainable reading, as the community campaign to support sustainable reading constitutes one of the most prominent of these efforts.

The first session of the campaign in 2025 succeeded in attracting more than 75,000 beneficiaries, exceeding the target of 50,000 beneficiaries in less than a year, through 2,000 cultural and knowledge events organized in cooperation with more than 100 government and private entities.

The second session, which was launched this year to coincide with the “Year of the Family,” aims to attract 100,000 beneficiaries in an effort to consolidate the role of the family as the primary incubator of the language and the primary partner in building a reading generation.

The role of the Kalima Reading Club is consistent with the mission of the Kalima Translation Project, which was launched in 2007 with the aim of reviving the translation movement in the Arab world and transferring the most prominent international publications into the Arabic language. The club is a natural extension of this knowledge project, as it allows readers to view translated books, discuss them, and benefit from their intellectual and cultural contents, which contributes to expanding perceptions and enhancing cultural exchange between peoples.

The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, through the club and its activities, aims to enable various segments of society to access knowledge of the Arabic language, achieving Abu Dhabi’s strategic vision of promoting the Arabic language and devoting the concept of sustainable reading between generations.
