Hamas dissolves its government in Gaza, and the National Committee confirms its readiness to manage the Strip

The Hamas movement announced on Tuesday the dissolution of the government emergency committee responsible for administering Gaza after two decades of assuming power, while the National Committee for Administration of the Gaza Strip announced its readiness to assume its duties within the framework of the ceasefire agreement with Israel and the American peace plan.

The announcement of the dissolution of the government represents a remarkable political shift for the Hamas movement since it took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 following military confrontations with the rival Fatah movement led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Director-General of the Government Media Office and the official spokesman for the government, Ismail Al-Thawabta, told Agence France-Presse, “The head of the government emergency committee and the acting head of government follow-up, Muhammad Al-Farra, officially submitted his resignation from his position.”

He added that Al-Farra also decided to “dissolve the government emergency committee, to facilitate the process of administrative and governmental transition to the National Committee for Gaza Administration, on which the Palestinian factions and forces agreed.”

Al-Thawabta confirmed in a statement during a press conference in Gaza that “all the administrative and legal preparations and arrangements for the process of receiving and handing over to the government system” in the Gaza Strip had been completed.

He explained that “it will be ensured that there will be no administrative and technical vacuum,” stressing that “all employees working in providing services are state employees and are fully and fully prepared to work under the responsibility of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.”

The government media office called for “immediate acceleration of the steps for the National Committee to enter Gaza and exercise its national and administrative duties and responsibilities.”

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said that the step “was carried out in coordination with Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators and aims to remove pretexts from the occupation, which continues its aggression and war of extermination,” expressing his hope that “the entry of the National Committee to administer Gaza will be expedited and Hamas will confirm its readiness to hand over the governmental tasks to the National Committee and make it successful.”
After the announcement issued by the Hamas movement and its government, the head of the National Committee for Gaza Administration, Ali Shaath, confirmed the readiness of the committee to assume responsibility for the administration of the Gaza Strip.

This committee was formed by the Peace Council established by US President Donald Trump, after he played the role of mediation in the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel in October.

Shaath said in a statement, “We affirm that the National Committee is fully prepared to carry out its national responsibilities, as soon as the necessary capabilities are available for its work.”

He stressed the need to provide “the basic requirements for the success of the committee’s work, which are the existence of one authority and one law with a clear reference, and one weapon subject to this authority,” stressing the need to “provide the necessary political, administrative, and security environment to enable the committee to perform its tasks effectively, and in a way that achieves the interests of our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”

For its part, the “Peace Council” established by US President Donald Trump said that a committee of technocrats should supervise weapons.

The council added in a statement, “The principle requires that there be one authority, one law, and one weapon. This means unifying all weapons under the control of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.”
