The United Nations launches the first global dialogue on artificial intelligence governance

The opening session of the global dialogue aims to ensure that governance frameworks reflect the priorities of all countries, not just the most technologically advanced ones, and that the benefits of AI are shared among all.

The discussions will address multiple topics, including:

🔹Opportunities and implications of this technology,

🔹How to bridge the digital divide in the field of artificial intelligence,

🔹International cooperation on artificial intelligence governance,

🔹Ensuring effective and strong human oversight of artificial intelligence systems, in accordance with international law, to ensure safety and security.

In the context of preparing for the global dialogue, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, confirmed that artificial intelligence is developing “very quickly” And he said: “The question is: Will we govern it together, or will we let it govern us? For the first time, the AI Dialogue gives every country a seat at the table. Now we must turn global engagement into global action, to make AI safer, fairer, more accessible and ethical.”

For her part, the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, stressed that the global dialogue is not limited to merely regulating technology, but rather is related to… “Defining a shared vision in which technological progress goes hand in hand with human dignity, equity and sustainable development.”

She stressed that if it is governed responsibly and collectively, “artificial intelligence has the potential to accelerate progress towards achieving almost all sustainable development goals, as it provides new and powerful tools in the fields of health care, education, scientific research, disaster preparedness, and agriculture.”

Existing AI governance frameworks have been mostly shaped by countries with well-developed AI sectors, while countries most vulnerable to its consequences have had the least influence in their design.

The global dialogue aims to correct this imbalance. It represents the first platform, under the mandate of the General Assembly, in which Member States and all concerned parties meet to discuss the governance of artificial intelligence. It will also be held periodically to exchange best practices and national and regional experiences, and build a common approach to the governance of artificial intelligence.
