"Emirates Water and Electricity" Registration is open for its 20th clean energy certificate auction
Abu Dhabi, 7 July / WAM / The Emirates Water and Electricity Company announced the opening of registration to participate in its 20th auction of clean energy certificates, and it will close on July 31, 2026.
Since the launch of the regulatory policy for the Clean Energy Certificates Program in 2021 by the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, this program has become an essential component within the framework of the transition in the energy sector in the emirate, as it has received wide attention from multiple major sectors, including health care, retail industry, real estate, events, and the commercial sector, which has given it a strong competitive advantage.
Emirates Water and Electricity Company plays a pivotal role in enabling and operating the clean energy certificate market, as the sole registered body and operator of the program.
As the company continues to implement its strategy to expand renewable energy capabilities, it is expected that energy production capabilities will reach about 17.5 gigawatts of solar energy by 2030, and exceed 30 gigawatts by 2035, which will allow a wider group of entities to obtain their share of certificates and officially document their consumption of renewable energy.
Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Chief Asset Officer at Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said that as the company continues to implement world-leading projects in the field of renewable energy, it is opening new horizons for various institutions to contribute a major role in the energy sector transition process, as the continued growth witnessed by the company’s portfolio of renewable energy projects allows it to provide clean energy certificates on an unprecedented scale, ensuring that there is nothing that might hinder obtaining documented clean energy.
He added that reaching the 20th auction is evidence of the willingness of various sectors to document their climate work in an unprecedented manner, while calling on all institutions to benefit from this expansion of capabilities, and to integrate this vital tool into their strategic plans to reduce carbon emissions from their operations.
He pointed out that to ensure ease of access, Emirates Water and Electricity Company maintains competitive prices for each source of energy, which contributes to reducing entry barriers whether to participate in auctions or to purchase directly from the company, pointing out that participants are informed of the minimum prices for each type of certificates “solar, nuclear, and wind energy” as part of the auction registration process.
Each clean energy certificate represents the environmental attributes associated with the production of 1 megawatt per hour of renewable or clean energy, and is compatible with the International Renewable Energy Certification (I-REC) standards. It is currently the only tool approved in Abu Dhabi for documenting the consumption of electricity produced by clean energy sources, which enables organizations to officially document the use of clean energy and make tangible progress to achieve their goals in the field of sustainability.
The auction relies on a competitive “pay-by-bid” mechanism, allowing participants to submit their bids to obtain their share of clean energy, with the result of the auction being announced by August 5, 2026.
