Austria is moving towards carbon neutrality by launching its latest electric steel mills

VIENNA, 7 July / WAM / Austria has taken a strategic step towards achieving carbon neutrality in the heavy industry sector, with the Austrian steel manufacturer Voestalpine announcing the start of trial operation of its new GreentecSteel electric plant in the city of Dunowitz in the state of Steyrmark by the fall of this year.

This Austrian initiative represents a qualitative shift towards the production of “green steel”, by replacing traditional smelting furnaces with electric arc furnace technologies, which contributes to reducing carbon emissions by more than 90% by 2030, with the aim of reaching complete carbon neutrality in steel production by 2050.

Herbert Ebensteiner, CEO of Voestalpine, explained that the new factory will operate with clean energy in parallel with traditional smelting furnaces during the current phase, pointing to the gradual replacement plan that will see one of the traditional smelting furnaces shut down by 2029.

This step comes in response to the clearly growing global demand for sustainable steel, particularly from the automotive and railway sectors.
