"DP World" Achieving record efficiency levels in the port of Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam – Tanzania, 7 July / WAM / The Dubai Ports World Group, “DP World”, in Dar es Salaam, achieved an unprecedented operational achievement, after it succeeded in reducing the time required to unload goods from ships in the port of Dar es Salaam by more than 90%, an achievement that embodies the qualitative transformation that the container terminal has witnessed since the group took over its operation in April 2024, and represents a milestone in the process of developing the efficiency of operations and enhancing the performance of the port.

DP World, which operates the terminal under a 30-year concession contract, continues to invest in modernizing the port and expanding its operations, supporting Tanzania’s long-term commercial ambitions.

The group succeeded in redirecting the port’s operations towards handling ro-ro cargo ships, enabling it to receive and handle larger and more complex ships in accordance with the highest safety standards, in addition to contributing to reducing supply chain costs, enhancing commercial competitiveness, and supporting the country’s economic growth.

This operational transformation contributed to reducing the time of unloading similar shipments by more than 90%, from more than 300 hours to less than 28 hours, establishing a new standard for operational efficiency in the port.

During the first quarter, the port achieved another operational achievement by receiving the ship “MV Ramhan”, which is the longest ship ever to dock in the port of Dar es Salaam, with a total length of 240 metres, and a capacity of 7,790 vehicles. The ship unloaded 779 car equivalent units, most of them heavy vehicles, in just over 27 hours.

The shift in cargo handling using specialized car carriers and trucks, in cooperation with the Tanzania Ports Authority, contributed to enhancing the efficiency of heavy vehicle unloading operations and accelerating their pace while raising the highest standards of operational safety.

This shift from general cargo handling to more specialized operations has also contributed to achieving sustainable growth in performance across various cargo categories, strengthening Dar es Salaam’s competitive position as a pivotal trade center in East Africa.

The features and results achieved included reducing the unloading time by +90%, with the time decreasing from more than 300 hours to less than 28 hours for similar shipments, and a record performance in ship handling by successfully receiving and unloading the longest ship docked in the port with a total length of 240 metres, and raising the carrying capacity and efficiency, with the start of operations of car carriers and specialized trucks, which helped enhance speed and safety, in addition to the economic impact and reduction of logistical costs to support productivity, GDP growth, commercial competitiveness, and development. Working personnel, as the company contributed to the employment of more than 2,900 Tanzanian citizens, in addition to enhancing their capabilities through ongoing training programs in the areas of operations, operation and safety.
