The International Automobile Federation launches an initiative to enhance road safety in the Middle East and North Africa

Cairo, 9 July / WAM / The International Automobile Federation (FIA) launched the “Safe Mobility for All and Life” program, with the aim of supporting efforts to enhance traffic safety in the Middle East and North Africa region, by providing training and guidance and adopting evidence-based procedures to support member clubs and government agencies in developing initiatives that contribute to improving road safety.
The program was launched during the first FIA Regional Mobility Council symposium in the Middle East and North Africa region, which was held in Cairo, with the participation of 17 member clubs from 15 countries. The symposium reviewed the reality of traffic safety in the region, the vision of the United Nations in this field, and the safe system approach, in addition to encouraging clubs to exchange experiences and knowledge learned from their initiatives.
Mohammed bin Sulayem, President of the International Automobile Federation, said that the launch of the “Safe Transport for All and Life” program for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region embodies the commitment of the Federation community to enhance traffic safety at the region level, noting that the inaugural symposium in Cairo brought together a large number of the Federation’s member clubs.
He added that the International Automobile Federation is committed to supporting its members in implementing initiatives aimed at reducing road accidents, explaining that the program provides clubs and government agencies with the necessary tools and support to contribute to creating safer roads for all.
He pointed out that traffic accidents are still one of the most prominent causes of death in the world, and that low- and middle-income countries bear the greatest burden, while countries in the Middle East and North Africa region continue to face major challenges in the field of traffic safety, according to the World Health Organization.
The program, which is one of the initiatives of the FIA University, will be presented through in-person and remote sessions under the supervision of international experts, with the aim of helping member clubs and government agencies develop traffic safety projects that achieve a tangible impact.
The program was developed in cooperation with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and with the support of the FIA Foundation, reflecting the member clubs’ commitment to an active role in developing practical initiatives that contribute to saving lives on the roads.
Issa Hamza Al-Failakawi, President of the FIA Council for the Middle East and North Africa, said that member clubs in the region face special challenges in the field of traffic safety, stressing that strengthening cooperation and exchanging experiences between them contributes to finding solutions that meet their needs.
He added that the launch of the “Safe Transportation for All and Life” program in the region is an important first step towards transforming the local experiences and knowledge of the member clubs into practical initiatives that have a tangible impact in enhancing traffic safety.
